WHEN IS A LYMPH NODE ULTRASOUND USEFUL?

An ultrasound examination of the lymph nodes is the first and most important diagnostic measure in many situations. I recommend a lymph node ultrasound in particular for:

  • Palpably enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, groin or other parts of the body
  • Unclear swelling that has persisted for more than two weeks
  • Follow-up of already known lymph node changes
  • Aftercare for oncological diseases – e.g. after breast, thyroid or skin cancer
  • Clarification of suspected lymphomas or other systemic diseases
  • Accompanying diagnostics for thyroid diseases or chronic inflammation

The high-resolution ultrasound enables me to detect even the smallest changes of just a few millimeters and provide a reliable assessment – pain-free, without radiation exposure and in real time.

HOW THE LYMPH NODE SONOGRAPHY WORKS

The ultrasound examination of the lymph nodes in my private practice on Leinpfad in Hamburg takes place in a calm, personal atmosphere:

1. detailed preliminary consultation: I take the time to discuss your complaints, medical history and previous findings with you.

2. systematic examination: I use a high-resolution transducer to examine the relevant lymph node sites – depending on the problem, in the neck (cervical), in the armpit (axillary), in the groin (inguinal) or in other regions.

3. assessment in real time: I assess the size, shape, internal structure, blood flow (Doppler sonography) and delimitability of each conspicuous lymph node directly during the examination.

4. immediate discussion of findings: you will receive a clear explanation of my findings on the same day and – if necessary – a clear recommendation for further action.

The entire examination is painless, usually takes 15-30 minutes and requires no special preparation.

LYMPH NODE REGIONS IN ULTRASOUND

In my private practice, I examine all relevant lymph node locations by ultrasound. Depending on your questions and symptoms, I carry out a targeted assessment:

Neck & jaw

Cervical and submandibular lymph nodes – often conspicuous in ENT infections, thyroid diseases or head and neck tumors

Armpit

Axillary lymph nodes – particularly relevant for breast cancer follow-up, skin changes or infections of the upper extremities

Groin & pelvis

Inguinal lymph nodes – important for infections in the leg/pelvic area, dermatological abnormalities or gynecological or urological diagnostics

COSTS & ASSUMPTION OF COSTS

The cost of an ultrasound examination of the lymph nodes is 150 euros. If there is a medical indication, the costs are usually covered by private health insurance. Self-payers are also welcome.

I would be happy to advise you on the costs in advance – simply contact me by e-mail or book an appointment directly.

Ultrasound of the lymph nodes in Hamburg: your expert diagnostics at Leinpfad

Lymph nodes play a central role in the immune system. As part of the lymphatic system, they filter pathogens, cell debris and potentially malignant cells from the lymph fluid. Changes in the lymph nodes – be it an enlargement (lymphadenopathy), a conspicuous shape or an altered internal structure – can indicate various diseases.

Why ultrasound for lymph node diagnostics?

High-resolution ultrasound (sonography) is the preferred imaging method for the initial assessment of lymph nodes. With frequencies between 7 and 15 MHz, even superficial lymph nodes as small as a few millimeters can be visualized. With the help of Doppler sonography, I also assess the blood flow patterns, which provide important information on the dignity (benign or malignant).

Which lymph node changes can be detected by ultrasound?

Ultrasound enables the assessment of numerous criteria: Size, shape (oval vs. round), echogenicity, presence of a hilus, border, internal architecture and vascularization. Abnormal findings may indicate reactive enlargement (e.g. in the case of infections), inflammatory diseases, lymphomas or metastases. The differentiated ultrasound assessment helps to differentiate between harmless findings and those that require clarification.

Lymph node ultrasound in follow-up care and prevention

Regular ultrasound checks of the lymph nodes are an essential part of follow-up care, especially for patients with a history of oncology – for example after breast cancer, malignant melanoma, thyroid cancer or lymphoma. However, a lymph node ultrasound can also provide certainty and clarity in preventive care.

Was kostet die Lymphknoten-Sonographie?
